Essay: Religious Issues

For several decades, religion in the educational system has been a topic of debate and continues to cause controversy in our schools. Problems regarding gardening and religion date to the beginning of the common school action in the nineteenth century, (Spring; pg. 63). Since then, there are have been numerous court brasss which have influenced many policies in our schools today.
One of the roughly influential court cases that has affected educational policies regarding religious issues was Engel vs. Vitale (1962). The Engel vs. Vitale case began in April 1962 when the state of New York chose to implement a course in the public schools that would have a daily appeal activity. The prayer was short in length, denominationally neutral and students could choose to participate if they wanted. The United States Supreme Court decided that it was against the runner Amendment (applicable to other states through the Fourteenth Amendment) to allow students to recite prayer in school.



According to the Constitutional Law §936 the First Amendments proscription against governmental establishment of religion, as reinforced by the viands of the Fourteenth Amendment, government in this country, be it state or federal, is without power to prescribe by law any occurrence form of prayer which is to be used as an decreed prayer in carrying on any program of governmentally sponsored religious activity. In regards to this this case, Desert View High give instruction has had no known cases of religious issues that have been brought to the districts attention. I used this case as an example for myself, in that I have unintentionally went against the First Amendment and led my baseball team in prayer before each game.
