1. Cubism, The Movement
1.1 Shattering Tradition
Cubism plays a major role in modern-day art primarily because of its origins. Cubism
began in 1907 as its Masters rebelled against impressionism, and wholly of its traditional compositional
elements. Cubism challenged the tradition of characterization in an orderly personal manner that mirrors reality or
moments in time. Instead, Cubism wants to present the viewer with objects or subjects as represented
simultaneously from several points of view. (1) This rebellion against naturalism depended upon one
fundamental confidence: that everything is seen from a single, fixed viewpoint. Cubism abandoned this
rule. (2) Guillaume Apollinaire stated, The art of painting headmaster arrangements composed of elements
taken from conceived rather than perceived reality is Cubism.
Cubism violently shocked formal and traditional art circles, especially when Picasso completed
and presented his Les Demoiselles dAviginion (figure 1). First, the pornographic nature whereby Picasso
depicts five female prostitutes in a brothel outraged many critics. Second, the figures portrayed in this
painting were composed of flat, splintered planes rather than as rounded volumes in space.



Similarly
glaring to critics, was that the prostitutes arms were raised above their heads while striking seductive
poses; additionally, their looks let on all conventional depictions of beauty. Third, the space of the
brothel which should recede into the background, seems to get hold forward like shattered planes of glass
(3). Picassos Les Demoisellers DAvignon was besides influenced greatly by African masks; these harsh and
primitive portrayals argon themselves the prostitutes faces.
Like all other great Masters of machination such as Michelangelo, Renoir, Monet and
those chastised by critics, scorned by the public, and denied showings at the Paris Salon --Cubism is
