The Struggles of “Class”
Sherman Alexie’s appropriately titled short-story, “Class” portrays a Native American toilsome to find where he belongs. Edgar Eagle Runner is a winning lawyer that does not extend into the Indian world because of his monetary status and not into the money world because of his heritage. Through the study events in his life, meeting his future wife, the actual brotherhood, and a darkness at Indian bar, Alexie uses the character of Edgar to depict the struggles of alteration into a society.
The story begins with the meeting of Susan. She questions his religious beliefs by asking him if he is Catholic. Edgar searches the room trying to find clues to the main denomination of the party. He avoids her question but she is very persistent and keeps returning to the question. Edgar eventually replies, “Baptized but not confirmed” (Alexie 585). Edgar’s involuntariness to answer her question clearly shows his uneasiness of not fitting into her society.
Edgar begins talking to Susan because she is the tenth most attractive woman at the party. Edgar’s lack of assurance of himself because of his ethnic background challenges himself everyday, including in his ability to charm women.
When the two finally exchange names, readers check off that Edgar Eagle Runner was originally named Edgar Joseph. He had changed his name to fit the more Native American mold.
The marriage between Susan and Edgar shows sheer problems of class acceptance beginning with the wedding. Edgar’s mother approves of the marriage because she always wanted Edgar to marry a white woman. She, herself, matrimonial a half-white, half-Indian man. However, Susan’s parents and brother show their disapproval by not even attending the ceremony. Her brother questioned her, “Why do you want to share a banking account with him?” (Alexie 587).
