The story begins in Osage County, Oklahoma. In the early 1920s thither were a series of murders, The Osage Indian Murders. This was cal direct the Reign of Terror by the newspapers. Estimates are to show that there was at least 60 or richesier Osage Indians murdered from the dates of 1921 to 1925. These murders had appeared to be caused from the white-hot man caused by their greed from the wealthy Osage Indians. The Osages were producing a lot of oil, valuable oil. The wealth of the Osage had their own land and was producing this oil and each of these Osages had headrights that earned a lot of annual royalties.

Tribal members certain an allotment of 657 acres in 1907. They and their legal heirs earned royalties whether or not they were Osage on the headrights from their portion of the oil producing land. The tribe held the mineral rights communally, and paid its members by a percentage related to their holdings. By a law of 1921, Congress required most Osage of one-half or more Native American ancestry to consent court-appointed guardians until they demonstrated competency; all minors were required to generate guardians appointed, whether or not they had living parents. The guardians were generally local white lawyers and businessmen. The Osage wealth attracted many opportunists, some of them with criminal intent.

They needed help from the freshly organized FBI when local or state could not exonerate the rising numbers of murders. Pyle presented his evidence of murder and conspirency and requested an investigation. In its undercover investigation, the FBI tack that several murders in one family were found to have been committed by a gang led by William King of Osage Hills Hale, with the goal of gaining the oil royalty headrights and wealth of tribe members, including his nephews Osage wife, the last survivor.
