I recently performed a Windshield Survey in Geor personateown, Texas. As the mother of a seventeen year hoar boy, I was startled by the teen maternalism statistics that read a daycare center at the high give lessons campus for the children of its students. Further research showed that Texas teen pregnancy ranking is the fourth highest in the nation (Garrett, 2010). This coincides with the Texas Board of Education and its adoption of abstemiousness-only political platform that teaches abstinence as a form of birth control. In the interest in improving the health of teenagers and young adults, there is a clear need for improved sex education, specifically a comprehensive sex education program that includes pregnancy, sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) streak.
The Georgetown Independent School district has adopted an abstinence-only program called Worth the Wait. Sponsored by the Scott & dust coat Health Plan, Worth the Wait admits that the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rates in the industrialized countries (Worth the Wait, 2011). The program acknowledges the STD epidemic.
However, the program does cryptograph to teach the teens about responsible sexual behaviors, such as contraceptives and condom use to prevent the spread of disease. Instead, it teaches teens refusal skills and asks the teens to commit to abstinence by signing a confidence card. An abstinence pledge from middle school students is an unreasonable expectation in the intent to prevent pregnancy, STDs, and HIV.
Abstinence is an unreasonable approach to STD, HIV, and pregnancy prevention in because sex is a physiological need and non a choice. Abraham Maslow, a psychologist, introduced a hierarchy of needs which is authorized in the psychological and health fields.
